Travel diary

Extract from "PARIS-NEW-YORK. A weekly newspaper for the development of financial, industrial and commercial relations between France and the United States". Issued on Saturday 10 December 1881.

Passengers on transatlantic steamers will find the Paris-New York on board of these ships on the day of their departure, either from Europe or from the United States. New York, 5th December All the steamers arriving in New York announce that terrible storms are reigning over the Atlantic Ocean. The new steamer Coptic, of the White Star line, which left Queenston on 17 November, called at Sandy Hook on Friday 2 of this month. On 23 November, she encountered a hurricane which swept everything on deck that could be carried away. Two sailors were swept overboard and the ship's third officer, Mr Bailey, was seriously injured. That day, the ship was only able to travel 69 miles. Throughout the crossing, it had to contend strong westerly winds. The steamer Arizona, which left Queenston on 20 November, also had to battle against appalling weather. Commander M. Arnold had his leg broken by the impact of a wave on 22 November. Both ships performed admirably. The Coptic is now on its way to the Pacific Ocean, where it will serve in the near future.
